Chaos Theory Jess

Jessica Fletcher

Occupation: Filmmaker (by choice), Marketing Flunky (by necessity)

Description/Bio: Born and raised in Chicago, Jess moved to New York to attend NYU Film School and never went back. Her father, Jim, left home when Jess was in junior high. Her mother, Monica, has never forgiven him. Or, anyone else, for that matter. Sadly, as an only child, Jess manages to be the main recipient of her mother’s anger.

In college, Jess met Owen Dunne. After three weeks of dating during their senior year, they realized that their real attraction for each other was their work. Since graduating, they’ve spent the last six years writing and producing an independent film. They spend many nights and weekends rewriting, shooting, and generally creating their movie piecemeal and with no backing.

Her first roommate out of college was Michelle Dumas (or “Michelle Dumb-ass” as Jess’ mother likes to call her), an associate at a large PR firm in Manhattan. Jess is never quite sure at any given moment why they’re still friends, but they seem to spend a lot of time together.

During the day, Jess works at Farnsworth, Mills, and Russell, a small marketing firm in midtown. She has no interest in her work, her company’s work, or any type of future there. She gets a paycheck, maintains her health insurance, and gets to make her daily calls to her mother for free.

Jess now lives in a long-term sublet apartment. Her mother’s friends, Saul and Mark, are living in London for an undetermined period of time.

Jess is smart and funny with a sense of style and a love for writing, film, and theater. She’s fairly easy-going, which works as a buffer for her random dating and her public status as a freak magnet. On the romance front, Jess broke off her long-term relationship with her boyfriend, Karl, two years ago. While it saddened her, she was ready to spend some time on her own projects, her own life, and having a little fun.

Lauren Cook is a writer / actress living in NYC. She won an Emmy.

She enjoys: a 4pm boozy brunch, tiny restaurants with flattering lighting, and a well-choreographed dance number. She feels a strong connection with Angela Lansbury. None of the material she wrote for Chaos Theory was in any way inspired by her own life. None of it. Not one iota.
